FAMILY WELFARE: WHAT IS OVULATION
What is the difference between human and animal ovulation?
Human ovulation, unlike that of animals is not dependent on sexual relations. In animals after the sexual act ovulation starts and hence chances of pregnancy even after single coitus are possible. While in human it is not so, ovulation takes place 14 days earlier of starting menstrual cycle only. In man even if intercourse takes place after a long duration of separation possibilities of extra ovulation are rare.
When ovulation takes place?
If the complete cycle from the beginning of one period to the beginning of next period is 28 days, ovulation would have occured on the 14th day i.e. 14 days before the next period. The danger of pregnancy would then be from the nineth to the sixteenth day both inclusive. For extra safety it is advisable to add one day more at both ends.
Is safe period reliable?
Safe period is the time during the menstrual cycle when ovulation^ is not expected for at least 48 hours or has not occured with in 48 hours, so that the sperm and ovum may not have a chance to fertilise. To have intercourse without fear of pregnancy is possible when menstrual cycle is regular.
